Questions people actually ask
Voice surgery, answered plainly
Can surgery permanently deepen your voice?
Yes. Pitch-lowering procedures such as type 3 thyroplasty shorten and slacken the vocal folds, and the anatomical change is permanent. Reported drops usually sit between 2 and 5 semitones. The permanence is exactly why candidacy assessment matters more than price — the change cannot be reliably reversed.
How much does voice deepening surgery cost in Turkey?
Surgeon fees in Istanbul typically fall between £2,600 and £4,500 depending on technique and whether laryngeal framework work is combined. We quote the surgeon fee and the travel cost as two separate numbers so the clinical price can be compared against any other country on its own terms.
Is voice masculinization surgery worth it if I am already on testosterone?
Often not. Testosterone lowers speaking pitch in most trans men within the first 6 to 12 months, and surgery before that plateau risks operating on a voice that would have changed anyway. We ask for at least 12 months of stable pitch on testosterone before assessing surgical candidacy.
What is puberphonia, and can surgery fix it?
Puberphonia — also called mutational falsetto — is a persistently high-pitched voice in a male whose larynx has physically completed puberty. First-line treatment is voice therapy, which resolves a large share of cases without any surgery at all. Type 3 thyroplasty is considered only where therapy has been tried properly and failed.
Will my singing voice change?
Almost certainly. Pitch surgery alters the vibrating length or tension of the folds, which moves your whole range, not just your speaking pitch. Most patients accept a narrower or shifted singing range as the cost of a settled speaking voice. If singing is central to your work, raise it in the first consultation.
Do you publish before and after voice recordings?
Only where a patient has given explicit written consent for that specific recording. We do not publish voice clips or identifiable photographs by default, and we do not present them as proof of what your result will be. Outcomes vary with anatomy.
How long is the voice rest after surgery?
Typically complete silence for the first 3 to 7 days depending on technique, then a graded return to speaking under instruction. Whispering counts as strain and is discouraged. Most surgeons want you in Istanbul for the first post-operative check before you fly.
